New jail's walls going up
Piece by piece, the walls of the Comal County Jail have begun taking shape this week, as an enormous crane has plucked 30-foot-tall panels from their casting beds and lifted them into place.
The 100-plus panels, which weigh as much as 30 tons apiece, transformed the construction site almost overnight. They clear the way for installing structural steel next week.
The panels are being installed by a crew from Top Flight Steel, which hooks cables to the panels, watches as the crane hoists them from the ground, then guides and welds them into place.
You can watch a video of the process.
